Literature Text

I snuffed him out like the
match he used to set
fire in my soul.

He gave me brittle
mica flowers, lavender and
yellow, promising gold in
them there hills and said
"Y'wanna bet?"

I did.

Swanky hotels by the
hour, and scuzzy bars with
top notch scotch smelled
like habit but tasted
like home (though the
sheets were never fresh and
the clothes, never clean).

It was part of the game I
forgot I was playing because
his suit was always
pressed.

I found his pages torn against
her breasts, the buttons
dropped on the floor and
scattered about her bra like
pearls.

She was beautiful.

Her number in his
matchbook said Velvet Revolver and
so did my fingers trembling on
steel.  He said I just needed
time, and promised gold
as she smelled of scotch, her
pressed dress wrinkled on
the posh hotel carpet.

I said,
"Y'wanna bet?"
This is a gift for *msklystron for winning the January Prompt contest at #Canadian-Writers. Her prompt for her gift poem was "Book" and this is what I ended up with.

Dictionary.com offers many definitions for the word 'book', and the following can be found in this poem:

1. a written or printed work of fiction or nonfiction, usually on sheets of paper fastened or bound together within covers.
2. a record of bets, as on a horse race.
3. a set or packet of tickets, checks, stamps, matches, etc., bound together like a book.
4. anything that serves for the recording of facts or events
5. in Mineralogy, a thick block or crystal of mica
6. to engage for one or more performances.
7. a bookmaker
8. to engage a place, services, etc

I'm sure there's a few I missed.

I wrote this as a poem about addiction and the battle within ones self. On a personal level, I haven't experienced classic addictions (drugs, alcohol) on myself, rather, those around me or in my family; it effects everyone.

Perhaps this isn't a light poem, and if she so chooses, she may pick another prompt and have me re-write for her gift, as I understand if this is too dark or not what she wanted. I hope she enjoys it none the less.

Whats it mean to you?
